Overview
Rainbow Factory Productions engaged our team to provide lighting operation and programming support for a series of three theatrical productions. While the venue’s lighting infrastructure was already in place, our role was to oversee the creative and technical implementation of the lighting design, ensuring that every cue, transition, and lighting effect supported the performances on stage.
With three separate productions taking place, each featuring its own themes, atmosphere, and performance style, careful planning and preparation were essential to delivering a smooth and engaging audience experience.
The Brief
In theatre, lighting plays a critical role in shaping how an audience experiences a performance. Beyond simply illuminating the stage, it helps direct attention, establish mood, support storytelling, and ensure seamless transitions between scenes.
Rainbow Factory Productions required a team capable of programming and operating the lighting system throughout the performances, while ensuring that the visual style of each production reflected the creative vision behind the shows.
Given the number of productions involved, the variety of scenes within each show, and the fast-paced nature of live theatre, it was important that every lighting cue was planned, tested, and refined before opening night.
Preparation & Rehearsals
To ensure the productions ran smoothly, our team attended two rehearsals prior to the performances.
These rehearsal sessions provided the opportunity to programme lighting cues, refine timings, reposition fixtures where required, and assess how the lighting interacted with performers, costumes, scenery, and staging.
Rehearsals are often where the most important decisions are made. By seeing the productions develop in real time, we were able to fine-tune the lighting design around the performances themselves rather than relying solely on a pre-planned approach.
This preparation allowed cues to be adjusted with precision, ensuring that every lighting change felt natural and supported the pacing of the productions.
Lighting Design & Operation
Across the three productions, lighting requirements varied significantly from scene to scene.
Some moments required a dark and dramatic atmosphere, using contrast and carefully controlled lighting levels to support the emotion of the performance. Other scenes demanded a much brighter and more energetic approach, particularly during musical numbers where movement, colour, and excitement became central to the audience experience.
Throughout the productions, every cue was designed to complement what was happening on stage. Rather than drawing attention to the lighting itself, the objective was to ensure that lighting became an integral part of the storytelling process.
Particular attention was given to transitions between scenes. In drama productions, accurate cue execution is essential. Blackouts, fades, scene changes, and timing-sensitive moments all contribute to the flow of a production, and even small delays can affect the audience experience. Through careful programming and rehearsal preparation, cues were executed smoothly and consistently throughout each performance.
Supporting Young Performers
As the productions featured a large number of young performers, audience experience was not the only consideration.
Children and young performers can often be unfamiliar with performing under stage lighting conditions, particularly when brighter fixtures are involved. Throughout the programming process, consideration was given to ensuring performers remained comfortable and confident on stage while still achieving the desired visual impact.
Balancing performer comfort with the creative requirements of the productions allowed the lighting design to enhance the performances without becoming distracting or overwhelming for those on stage.
The Outcome
By combining detailed preparation, creative programming, and attentive operation throughout the performances, the lighting supported the atmosphere, storytelling, and pacing of all three productions.
The rehearsal process allowed every cue to be refined in advance, ensuring smooth scene transitions, effective visual storytelling, and consistent execution throughout each show.
Through close collaboration with Rainbow Factory Productions, the final lighting design helped bring each production to life, supporting everything from dramatic theatrical moments to high-energy musical performances while maintaining a seamless experience for both performers and audience members alike.
